Abstract: At approximately 12:30 p.m. on April 26, 2004, Employee #1 was transferring molten petroleum resin from a heating pot to a ceramic coated metal coffee pot. The thermostat on the heating pot was not functioning and was only capable of heating its contents to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. The flash point for petroleum resin is 550 degrees Fahrenheit and auto-ignition may occur if the material is heated beyond 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Employee #1 was transferring the molten material into a coffee pot when the material exploded and burst into flame. The flaming material landed on his right hand and wrist. He was wearing long pants and one shirt with two under shirts. Gloves and safety glasses were available; however, he was not wearing them. He extinguished the flames on his hands and legs while still standing and yelled to two coworkers to call for help. He then took a thirty minute shower. He sustained secondary burns to his right hand and wrist, and superficial burns on his inner thigh of his right leg. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
