Abstract: At approximately 9:40 a.m. on November 24, 2002, Employee #1, a Ramp Services Supervisor, was on a tug truck in a yard at the back of the airline bag room getting ready to pull a cart to the tarmac for a flight. Employee #1 was sitting on the tug and turned around to talk to other employees. As Employee #1 turned back around and started to drive the tug forward, he noticed a cart rolling towards the tug. The cart was a box-type metal structure (10-ft-by-5-ft-by-5-ft) and open on two sides along its length. Both open sides were equipped with two-piece heavy plastic curtains to keep baggage from falling out. One end of each curtain was screwed to the cart's frame and the other to a curtain rod. Employee #1 instinctively reached out to push the loose cart back and grabbed one of the curtain rods with his left hand. A wedding ring on Employee #1's left ring finger got caught in one of the curtain rod screws and the momentum of the tug moving in one direction and the cart moving the opposite way severed his finger. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
