Abstract: On June 3, 2005, Employee #1, an apprentice carpenter, was performing general labor chores. A supervisor gave Employee #1 a powder-actuated Hilti nail gun (with two jammed nails stuck in it) and instructed him to put it in the supervisor's gang box to be sent out for repairs. After Employee #1 arrived at the gang box, he decided to change the gun's magazine and base plate without permission. He then placed the gun up against his left palm and pressed hard enough to release the safety. At that time his right hand pulled the trigger, and he shot a nail into his left palm and wrist. Employee #1 was treated with outpatient surgery at a hand clinic.
