Abstract: At approximately 8:30 a.m. on July 10, 2003, Employee #1, a 25-year-old carpenter at SURCO Development Contractors in Riverside, California, was working on a new housing tract in Winchester, California. Employee #1 was using a SKILSAW, Model HD77M, to cut lookouts for the fascia board. Working at the waist level, Employee #1 held onto a 2-in. by 4-in. board with his left hand instead of the auxiliary handle. The saw blade bound up and kicked back with his left hand in the way, resulting in an amputation of Employee #1's left thumb. The coworkers applied first aid and drove Employee #1 to the Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, California. Then, he was transferred to the Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, California, where he was admitted for surgery and was hospitalized.
