Abstract: At approximately 9:15 a.m. on May 22, 2003, Employee #1, a tree trimmer, was subcontracted to trim several eucalyptus trees at an outdoor filming studio. Employee #1 was the foreman on the project and was working to trim one of the trees, which was 79 feet high and about 33 inches in circumference. He was utilizing climbing gear to include climbing ropes, a tree workers' saddle, and spikes. Employee #1 was approximately at a height of 56 feet when, for some reason, the entire tree tipped over and he fell to the ground. Employee #1 was hospitalized and treated for fractures to his pelvis, ribs, and right arm. A detailed investigation revealed that the tree's root system was deficient, which caused it to uproot and tip over.
