Abstract: On March 22, 2000, Employee #1, an oil rig worker for Nabors Drilling, Inc., was rotating the standpipe goose neck to fit up with the rotary hose on well #37 at Occidental Petroleum's Elk Hills oil field. The pipe, which supplies drilling fluids to the rig, had been rotated out of position when the drilling rig was transported to the new drilling location. A sling had been attached to the standpipe and to the air tugger, which was a winch that secured the rig while the pipe clamps were loosened to rotate the pipe. As the clamps were loosened, the pipe suddenly slipped a short distance. The goose neck swung around, crushing Employee #1's chest against the rig. He suffered fractured ribs and a punctured lung.
