Abstract: An employee was performing preventive maintenance on an air conditioning system. Upon entering the equipment room, he noticed sounds coming from an air-handler unit and decided that the belts on its fan motor were making a noise. He turned the fan off at the disconnect switch located on the outside of the unit. He left and came back with three size B-91 fan belts. He saw that the belts were moving slowly in the reverse direction, which was caused by the inflow of air moving through the dampers. The employee assumed the belts were moving slowly enough for him to stop them with his fingers. He grabbed the belts with his right hand and his fingers were immediately pulled toward the pulley and into the pinch point between the pulley and the belts. The employee's ring finger was amputated at the first joint. He was taken to a hospital where he received surgery on his finger. He was released the same day.
