Abstract: Employee #1 was a mechanic who had approximately 10 years experience in this country and had been working as a mechanic for 2 months. On the day of the accident Employee #1 was filling a commercial truck tire with air using an air hose without a clip-on chuck and in-line regulator. Employee #1 was using a regular tire gauge and simultaneously checking the pressure and filling the tire with air. As he was releasing the air at the final pressure check, he pulled out the gauge. As he turned to walk away, the tire exploded. He was thrown about 4 feet against a parked vehicle by the blast. Employee #1 sustained major lacerations to his right leg and an amputation of his right little finger. He was transported to Holy Cross Hospital and later transferred to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center where he was hospitalized for emergency treatment and surgery.
