Abstract: At approximately 11:30 a.m. on August 20, 2002, Employee #1 and two coworkers were installing a new pump and associated piping at an Irrigation District Water Pump Station in Oakdale, CA. A coworker was using a hand-operated sprayer to sterilize the pipes with a chlorine and water sanitizer before installation when the sprayer suddenly lost pressure and stopped working properly. Employee #1 attached the air hose from the truck pump rig to an air nozzle connector so air pressure could be mechanically applied to the sprayer. This approach over-pressurized the sprayer and it exploded, striking him in the face and eyes. He and two coworkers were also sprayed all over by the chlorine mixture. Employee #1 was treated at Modesto Memorial Hospital for a fracture to the orbit of his right eye and multiple facial lacerations.
