Abstract: Employee #1 was cleaning the kitchen near the end of the shift. Employee #1 noticed that the meat grinder had not been torn down and cleaned and needed to be done before the end of the shift. Employee #1 removed the rotating slicer and the extrusion port. The auger was stuck and would not slide out easily. Using his right hand, Employee #1 tried to push the auger towards the opening. Employee #1 raised his left arm and struck the control switch starting the motor and the auger to turn. Employee #1 still had his hand in the grinder and the auger pulled his hand and arm into the grinders' auger. Employee #1 was able to turn the motor off himself but not until the auger had amputated his hand. The surgeons were unable to save or reattach his hand/arm and lost the right arm just below the elbow. He was hospitalized.
