Abstract: Employee #1, an experienced finish carpenter, was working on a gazebo-style roof. He was using a new 12 in. compound miter cut-off saw to make a compound miter cut on a 4 in. by 6 in. by 12 in. block of wood. The blade became caught momentarily and pulled in Employee #1's left thumb, which became jammed and wedged backward in the blade guard. His thumb sustained multiple lacerations and trauma, resulting in it being surgically amputated. The saw did not belong to Employee #1.
