Abstract: At 7:30 a.m. on December 22, 1997, Employee #1 was throwing the chain, while the oil well drilling crew was going back into the hole. The chain came off the drill pipe. Employee #1 then went to place the chain on the hook used to hang the chain. The hook is approximately 8-to-10-inches away from the chain roller. The driller had not backed off the chain and Employee #1's right little finger was drawn into the roller where it was severely injured. Employee #1 was taken to the hospital in Bakersfield and then was flown to San Francisco for treatment. His right little finger was amputated.
