Abstract: At approximately 9:20 a.m. on February 27, 1997, Employee #1, an inmate employed by the California State Department of Corrections, San Luis Obispo, CA, was using a table saw to cut a 2 ft by 2 ft by 3/8 in. piece of plywood. Employee #1, who was right-handed, amputated the little, ring, and middle fingers on his left hand. He was transported to the hospital, where his fingers were reattached. The saw was not equipped with an anti-kickback device or splitter. The hood guard that attached to the side of the saw was flipped over and on the back lower portion of the saw and not over the blade as it should have been. The employer was cited regarding the condition of the equipment.
