Abstract: At approximately 9:00 a.m. on October 30, 2002, Employee #1, a roofer, was using a portable propane torch to apply rubber roofing on the pitched roof of a commercial building under construction. When his hose became damaged, propane gas was released. The gas ignited and caught part of the roof on fire. Employee #1 removed his gloves to turn off the propane fuel, and also to operate a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. The hot roofing material and extinguishing agent made the roof surface slippery. Employee #1 fell, let go of the extinguisher, and his right hand landed palm down onto the hot rubber. He was hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns to his right hand.
