Abstract: On April 27, 2007, Employee #1 was loading a 1,100 pound, 4-foot-tall steel coil onto the spindle of the site's Number 40 uncoiler. When Employee #1 lowered the coil to the ground to adjust the load, the weight shifted, and the coil fell off the hoist hook and onto Employee #1's leg. Employee #1 sustained bruises, contusions, and abrasions, and was taken to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, where he was treated and released same day. The pain increased over the next week, and on Friday, May 4, Employee #1 returned to the Harbor-UCLA emergency room. He was admitted for surgery to remove damaged tissue. Employee #1 was a full-time employee for Virco Manufacturing Corporation, a furniture manufacturing facility specializing in school and institutional furniture, at a job site in Torrance, CA.
