Abstract: At approximately 4:30 p.m. on March 24, 2003, Employee #1, a laundered textiles deliverer, and an assistant were manually maneuvering a laundry cart down an 80-in.-wide hallway between the room service preparation area and the main kitchen of a hotel. The cart, manufactured by Meese Inc., contained napkins and was 28 in. wide, 48 in. long, and 65 in. high. Evening meal preparation was in progress, and the hall was occupied with employees and racks, some in transition and some stationary. Employee #1 was in front of his laundry cart pulling and steering it as he walked backward. Employee #1's right hand was at the corner of the cart. In attempting to navigate down the hallway to the kitchen, Employee #1 caught his finger between the window molding of an office window and the cart. The momentum of the cart and the 90-degree edge of the window molding pinched off the soft tissue of Employee #1's right ring finger tip. The distal aspect of the phalanx had to be removed to close the wound. Employee #1 wore no gloves, which may have contributed to the extent of the injury. Employee #1 was treated for his injury but was not hospitalized.
