Abstract: On January 28, 1998, Employee #1, a welder, was inside a building under construction, welding on a structural member that would later become a roof rafter. The beam was on jacks, with the approximately 5 ft web of the beam in a horizontal plane. A coworker employed by a fire sprinkler contractor drove an aerial device into the end of the beam and knocked it off the jacks. It fell onto Employee #1's legs and lower body, and he suffered a fractured pelvis and lower right leg. The employer indicated that the area under the beam was blocked with dunnage. Employee #1 stated that there was no cribbing or blocking under the beam and that the beam landed on a bottle of acetylene, reducing the severity of his injuries. The fire sprinkler employee had been warned several times not to work too close to the welder's area.
