Abstract: At 1:30 p.m. on March 15, 1996, Employee #1, a middle school teacher in a large city, was showing her students how to use the monkey bars at a local park. The bars were knurled, and approximately 1 in. in diameter. They were set at 13.25 in., center to center, and they were 3 ft wide. The distance from the bars to the pit of sand below them was 8 ft 3 in. Employee #1 was attempting to swing from the first bar to the second, missed, and fell flat on her back. She suffered a concussion, 4 broken ribs, and a sprained back. Employee #1 stated that the bars were not wet or slippery, but that in her opinion the height of the bars contributed to the severity of her injury.
