Abstract: At approximately 9:27 p.m. on November 1, 1995, Employee #1, a stunt man for Bad Bird Productions, Universal City, CA, was performing a backward fall from the roof of a 145 ft tall building for a movie. He was using a descender, but as he reached the destination of the fall zone, he did not slow down. The assistant stunt coordinator, who was operating the descender from the ground, applied the foot brake when he realized that Employee #1 was too close to the dressing set as well as to the ground. Employee #1's fall was abruptly stopped 25 to 40 ft from the ground. He suffered a broken back and was assisted by coworkers and the paramedic on site before being transported to the Los Angeles County Medical Center. The employer was cited for a serious violation.
