Abstract: On the afternoon June 14, 2000, Employee #1, an auto/truck mechanic at a repair shop, was using an electric pedestal wire wheel to clean a part when a wire from the wheel punctured his right middle finger. He asked a coworker to bring him some tweezers to pull out the wire, which the coworker did. Early the next morning, Employee #1 noticed that his entire right hand was swollen and that a red streak was progressing up his arm. Another coworker transported him to Mercy Hospital, where Employee #1 was diagnosed with blood poisoning from bacteria that had invaded the cut in his finger. He underwent minor surgery on his right hand and wrist to clean out the infection, and was released from the hospital the following day.
