Abstract: On July 30, 1996, Employee #1, age 18, and a friend were working at a small logging site. Employee #1 had received permission from another logging job to take a day off to help his friend, who had a verbal agreement to cut timber for a property owner. Employee #1 was limbing and bucking on a steep side hill, while his friend was felling trees in a brushy gully on the side of the hill. At approximately 11:45 a.m., Employee #1 was struck by a 36 in. dbh (diameter at breast height) Douglas fir. He suffered head trauma injuries and was killed. The accident was caused by the bucker and the faller working in too close proximity, and the faller not knowing the location of the bucker. The property owner had received a timber operator's license from CDF after filing a timber harvest plan.
