Abstract: Employee #1 was servicing the Balderson pin on a Volve VME Americas L150V front end loader. This pin locks the soil bucket or forklift forks on the front of the machine. The pin was not working properly, so Employee #1 cleaned the dirt off it. It then had to be lubricated, so Employee #1 put some grease in his right hand and had a coworker (the truck's operator) move the pin in and out from the cab. A burr on the shaft caught Employee #1's hand and pulled it into the frame, amputating his right thumb as it passed through.
