Abstract: Employee #1 was making the final connection between a new 12 in. water line and an existing 12 in. water line at the bottom and end of a 10 ft deep by 12 ft wide trench. The trench was heavily shored except at the ends, where digging was not being done, to allow the connection to be made. Although coworkers were present, no one saw exactly what happened. They heard Employee #1 yell and turned to see him pinned against the side of the trench by a large chunk of earth. He suffered trauma to his back and was hospitalized. It is believed that rain the day before had saturated the soil, allowing the chunk of earth to break off and roll down to the bottom.
