Abstract: At approximately 11:20 a.m. on or about May, 3, 1997, Employee #1 and two coworkers were felling a tree. The tree was near a house, so the limbs were being removed before the tree was cut. One coworker was in the tree doing the cutting, and the other coworker was holding a rope attached to the limb to lower it after it was cut. One limb had already been removed and they were working on a second limb. As it was being lowered, the limb swung around and hit an approximately 3 in. diameter by 8 in. long dead branch. The dead branch flew about 20 ft and struck Employee #1 in the face and head. The first coworker finished lowering the cut limb and went to help Employee #1, while the second coworker had the owner of the house call 911. The two coworkers tried to keep Employee #1 sitting upright until EMS arrived. Employee #1 was killed.
