Abstract: At 7:44 p.m. on August 23, 2023, an employee was assisting in various support activities at Stitcher #9, an industrial binding machine in the Bindery Department while indoor temperature was reportedly above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. At around 7:40 p.m. the employee collapsed while seated during a rest break. The employee was sitting at the bench of Stitcher #4, an inactive binding machine, which was his regular workstation. The employee collapsed below the workstation surface out of clear view to the rest of the production floor. At around 9:15 p.m., a supervisor discovered the employee unresponsive, immediately attempted resuscitation, and called for emergency assistance. Emergency responders arrived at around 9:22 p.m. and attempted advanced life support. The responders transported the employee, who remained unresponsive, to a hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead. Both employees and managers acknowledge that ambient temperature within the production areas of the facility increases during hot weather events, however indoor temperature was not monitored nor were indoor temperature readings available of the production area in the days preceding the fatality.
