Abstract: At approximately 2:30 p.m. on June 16, 2006, an employee worked at Millers Ranch, a single-family home community. He was employed by Envirocare Landscape, a landscaping service that operated in the San Diego County area. The employee was trimming a Bougainvillea vine that measured 5.5 ft high, with a gasoline powered Echo Hedge Trimmer, Model SHC-2100, Serial Number 50800. The employee was standing on a pile of dirt and rocks, and was unable to reach the top of the vine. While cutting the upper section of the vine, he lost his balance, and then lost control of the hedge trimmer. The hedge trimmer fell backward toward the employee, who placed his left hand in front of his face to protect it. This resulted in lacerations to the fingers of his left hand. The employee was transported to Grossmont Hospital by a coworker. The employee was examined by a physician at the hospital who classified the injury as a traumatic amputation of the left ring finger, with lacerations to the tips of the third and fifth fingers.
