Employee's thumb is amputated from unguarded alligator shear

At 8:00 a.m. on April 29, 2019, an employee was operating a Honda, gas engine powered, Model 1600, Alligator Shear without the point of operation guard in place. The employee was cutting an approximately 2 inch diameter, recycled, copper wire strand into smaller pieces to be stripped, packaged, and sold. The employee placed a length of copper wire strand into the Alligator Sheer and held it in place with both hands near the point of operation and depressed the foot switch. The employee's right thumb was resting to the side and below the top of the copper wire strand in the danger zone when the jaws of the Alligator Sheer closed and cut through the wire and the employee's gloved right thumb, resulting in an amputation. The employee was not hospitalized.
