Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 96273.015
Event: 05/30/2017
Employee crushes fingers in conveyor belt gears

At 2:30 p.m. on May 30, 2017, Employee #1, a new employee, and a coworker were working in House #9 at an egg farm. The employee was on his first day of work for the company and was being trained by the coworker. Employee #1 was shown how to watch the conveyer belts on seven rows of a TECNO X/2898 egg collection machine. The employees job was to watch the belts and make sure that they did not get bunched up. Employee # 1 was directed by the coworker to engage the stop button if something happened with the belts and then contact the coworker and he would come to fix any problems. Employee #1 was watching the belts when a chicken jumped up and scared him. This caused the employee to jump back and he stuck the fingers on his left hand in between two drive gears that drive the conveyor belt. The employees fingers were pulled through the gears, causing crushing injuries to his middle and ring fingers on his left hand. Employee #1 went down to the lower level where the coworker was working, and they activated the stop button and started the emergency notification process. Employee #1 was taken by ambulance to a local emergency room for treatment, and then taken to surgery. The employee did not suffer any bone loss or amputation.
