Worker Is Killed after Being Struck by Pipe

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on January 27, 2009, Employee #1, of Venable's Construction, was unloading steel pipe from a trailer. He was using a stringing cable and Caterpillar Trackhoe to move the 40 feet long, 6.625 inch diameter pipe that weighed approximately 790 pounds. The trackhoe operator opened the door to speak with the spotter and accidently hit the controls releasing the suspended pipe. The pipe struck Employee #1 in the chest. He was hospitalized and died from his injuries.
