Employee Amputates Three Fingers While Operating Machine

At approximately 12:00 p.m. on January 13, 2010, Employee #1, a plant manager, was operating an Ungereer roller/ leveler machine. The employer is a small steel fabricator and distributor that cuts rolled steel for primarily commercial door companies. As Employee #1 was feeding a steel sheet into the roller, his glove on his left hand became caught in the roller. Employee #1 was hospitalized, where he was treated for the amputation of the tips of three fingers on his left hand. The accident investigation revealed that the machine was not guarded in the area where materials are fed.
