Event: 05/07/2004
Employee amputates finger while working on turbine

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on May 7, 2004, an employee of Solar Turbines was rebuilding a dynamometer and turbine for a customer at the Solar site. He was using a 20-in.-long prybar to support a 170-lb. steel ring. The employer provided a crane and tooling, however the employee did not use it at the time. The ring slipped while the employee had his finger in the assembly. The shearing action of the steel ring amputated the tip of his finger. He was hospitalized.
