Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 200962488
Event: 10/27/1998
ELECTRIC SHOCK - CONTACT WITH OVERHEAD LINE THRU TREE LIMB

A tree-trimming crew was contracted to clear excess tree limbs from the electric service for a residence. One of the employees was assigned to climb the tree to a height of about 5.2 meters above the ground and remove a limb with a gasoline-engine chain saw. Two ground workers pulled downward and outward on a rope attached to the limb as it was being cut. When the saw was halfway through the limb, it split up the middle for about 1.2 meters, causing it to spring upward and contact one of the three overhead power line conductors. The employee cutting the limb received an electric shock. The employee, who was semiconscious at the time, hung by his safety belt until he was rescued by his coworkers. The injured worker was hospitalized.
