EMPLOYEE KILLED WHEN STRUCK BY CAR ON HIGHWAY

On July 12, 1997, a highway construction crew was removing temporary stripping from a portion of US Highway 259-South and installing reflective buttons along the lane divider. One employee was driving a 1992 Dodge Pickup Truck towing a 1993 Orange/Flexolite Arrow Board Trailer (unit number 19). The vehicle was moving slowly along a portion of US Highway 259-South between State Highway 204 and Rush County Line. Employee #2 was sitting on the tailgate of the truck using a blowtorch to burn the temporary stripping while Employee #1 was following the truck and trailer on foot about 20-to-30 feet way taking up the torched temporary stripping. A motorist traveling south on the highway struck and killed Employee #1 as he was removing the temporary stripping, throwing him 65 ft in the air and into the north-bound traffic lane. The motorist then hit the pickup truck, injuring Employee #2's foot.
