Employee's finger amputated when caught in gear box

At approximately 3:10 p.m. on December 10, 2003, Employee #1 was using a bull pin and a hammer to remove a steel wedge from between the pinion housing post and a spacer block on a Mesta R-5 pinion gear box. A coworker was holding the wedge on the other side of the gear box post as Employee #1 hammered it out when the approximately 1,100 lb housing post dropped. Employee #1's left index finger became caught between the bull pin and the housing post, and was amputated. He was hospitalized for treatment of his injuries.
