Employee amputates fingertip when caught between purlins

At approximately 1:35 p.m. on September 29, 2003, Employee #1, a laborer, was working for a contractor that prepared panelized roofing structures and installed them in tilt-up commercial buildings. At the time of the accident, he and a coworker were installing F-46 metal hangers at both ends of 4 in. by 6 in. by 8 ft wood purlins and sub-purlins to prepare for panelized roofing work. After installing the hangers, both workers were manually moving the finished purlins from one stack to another. While placing a purlin, Employee #1 lost his balance and fell forward. The tip of his left ring finger became caught between two hangered purlins, amputating the tip. Employee #1 was transported to San Antonio Community Hospital in Upland, CA, where he underwent surgery and was discharged less than 24 hours after the accident.
