Employee Is Injured in Fall Through Roof Opening

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on August 5, 2005, Employee #1 was helping to move roofing supplies on the roof of a commercial building with a coworker. He was directed to take a piece of 4-foot by 8-foot plywood and make a ramp so a hand truck full of roofing materials could be moved over an object on the roof. The plywood was covering a roof opening and was not secured or marked. Employee #1 stepped onto and through the opening and fell approximately 20 feet to the decking. He sustained a serious back injury, a fractured left arm, a fractured rib, and a concussion. He was transported by emergency services to Scripps Memorial Hospital, where he stayed for five weeks.
