Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201502002
Event: 04/21/2000
Employee's hands crushed while installing highway guardrail

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on April 21, 2000, Employee #1, an operating engineer with nearly 7 years of experience working for Fanfa Construction, was working with a crane operator, installing the K-rail barrier along Tresler Road in Livermore, CA. At the 8.8 mile marker, the crane operator positioned a section of railing with the previously installed section. Employee #1 then aligned the K-rail eyes and inserted the connecting pin through them, when for some reason the end of the new K-rail lifted up and crushed his hands against the other rail. He was taken to Livermore Medical Center from where he was transferred to Davies Medical Center for surgery.
