Employee Amputates Finger in Exercise Equipment

On July 6, 2007, an employee was working in the service area of new car dealer. Most of the employer's area was covered by new car display. The service area, including the building and service bays, was located on the west side. Once a customer, who brought his car for servicing, left his exercise equipment by mistake in this area. The equipment was an Ablounger exercise equipment, weighing 15 lbs, 30-in. in height and approximately 4-in. by 15-in. section. The equipment was lying in that area for sometime. The employee, whose job was to clean and move cars around, was working in that area. He was trying to reach a water pipeline when the exercise equipment fell on the ground. As he tried to pick up the equipment with both hands, his right hand ring finger got pinched between two sections of the frame of the equipment and the finger tip was amputated at the spot. The employee was taken initially to the Torrance Memorial Hospital and later to the Orthopedics Institute in Hawthorne, where he was hospitalized for two days and surgery was performed.
