Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170605125
Event: 12/22/1992
Employee's pelvis fractured when caught under street sweeper

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on December 22, 1992, Employee #1 was performing minor maintenance repair on a Mobil Sweeper street sweeper when he decided to replace the universal joints of the drive shaft. The rear wheels of the sweeper were driven onto 4 in. by 4 in. wooden blocks for easier access to the drive line. Wooden blocks had also been placed in front of the front wheels to prevent the sweeper from rolling when the drive shaft was removed. When the drive shaft was removed, the sweeper rolled against the front wheel blocks, causing those blocks to dislocate and roll. The sweeper came off the rear wheel blocks, pinning Employee #1 under the sweeper. Employee #1's pelvis was caught by an angle iron brace of the frame, causing a hairline fracture of the pelvic bone.
