Event: 02/14/2007
Employee Amputates Thumb with Miter Chop Saw

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on February 14, 2007, an employee was cutting a plastic blind piece, dimensions, 17-in long by 1.25-in. thick by 3.5-in. wide, on a MAKITA, Model Number LS1221, compound Miter chop saw. He was holding the piece in his right hand during cutting it and operating the saw with his left hand. As the employee was cutting the piece, his right thumb inadvertently came in contact with the moving saw blade causing right thumb tip amputation. Initially, the employee was taken to the US Healthworks, Pomona, CA for treatment. The clinic referred the employee to the Ortho Med Group and ARC, Inc., West Covina, CA for surgery. The surgery was performed on the third day. The employee was hospitalized for less than 24 hours.
