Event: 10/01/2004
Employee's Hip Broken When Struck by Tree Trunk

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on October 1, 2004, Employee #1 was working for a tree removal service cutting trees located between two houses on a steep slope. Employee #1 was lowering a section of cut trunk using Hobbs blocks and a rope. The cut section fell until the slack in the rope was taken up and then it jerked up. Employee #1 had 2.5 wraps of rope around the block, but when the tree section jerked at the rope "got away" from Employee #1. He lost his balance and fell letting go of the rope. The trunk section fell approximately 65 feet to the ground where it bounced and landed on Employee #1. Employee #1 was hospitalized for treatment of a broken right hip. The tree section weighed approximately 350 lb.
