Employee's fingers amputated when caught by falling pipe

At approximately 10:15 a.m. on July 19, 1991, Employee #1 and a coworker were putting together 6 in. diameter water pipes. An approximately 160 lb, 19 ft long section had been placed on two 3 1/2 ft high stands, one located at each end of the pipe. One end of the iron pipe was to be connected to a plastic pipe, which would have stabilized the unit along its length. Before this connection was made, however, the iron pipe fell over. Employee #1 was on his knees close by, and he tried the to catch the falling pipe. His left ring and middle fingers were smashed against a small section of another pipe that was lying on the ground and amputated between the first and second joints.
