Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170196133
Event: 08/15/1990
Employee's fingers injured in table saw

At 9:00 a.m. on August 15, 1990, Employee #1, an inmate worker in the vocational mill and cabinet shop at Mule Creek State Prison, was using a table rip saw to cut a piece of plywood. The table fence was loose and the plywood bound on the blade, then kicked back. Employee #1's fingers contacted the unguarded blade, and he suffered two fractured fingers and lacerations. Employee #1 was a vocational education student, but he was also considered an employee. He violated strict requirements to use the saw guard; the instructor was not aware it was missing.
