Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170697957
Event: 06/24/1992
Employee's hand run over by trailer bin on track

On June 24, 1992, Employee #1, a transfer dump truck driver for Schmitt Lowbed Service of Redding, was delivering asphalt to a paving job near Anderson River Park in Anderson, CA. After dumping the contents in the truck and trailer, Employee #1 started to transfer the trailer dump bin back onto the trailer. The bin has an electrical drive unit controlled by a set of constant pressure push buttons mounted on the trailer bin frame, and the bin's steel wheels run on tracks. Employee #1 noticed a lump of asphalt on one wheel. He removed his right hand from the control, stopping the bin, and then reached with his right hand to remove the asphalt. The trailer rolled onto his glove and over the back of his hand. Employee #1 was well trained, and the bin's wheels were adequately guarded. No violations were found.
