Employee's back broken by rolling log

On September 4, 1991, Employee #1, a tree feller for N & W Logging, was felling trees in an area by himself. His supervisor was approximately 450 feet away on the landing area, but could not actually see him through the trees and brush. Employee #1 felled a tree and bucked it into 40 ft logs. He then went downhill and felled two more trees, which fell uphill and across the first tree. He began bucking the last two trees into 40 ft logs, standing on the downhill side, which he knew was wrong. One or more of the bucked logs rolled downhill and struck him. His supervisor heard him yelling and called for an ambulance. Employee #1 was transported to Howard Hospital in Willets, then to Santa Clara Medical Center in San Jose. He was admitted and treated for a broken back and other injuries.
