Employee's fingers amputated by unguarded saw

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on May 9, 1992, Employee #1, a cabinet worker with more than 30 years experience, was cutting 6 in. shelving from a warped 8 ft redwood board using an unguarded 10 in. Delta unisaw. He was feeding the board with his right hand and holding the board in place with his left hand as he made his cuts. The board began chattering, causing his left hand to leave the board and strike the exposed blade. Employee #1 suffered the amputation of his left thumb, middle, and ring fingers. A serious accident related violation of 4300(a) was cited.
