Investigation Summary
On October 11, 2002, two employees on a road striping crew were working a night job on an interstate highway within the city limits. They arrived at the site late and found the paving crew was out of sight over the overpass. They did not communicate to the General Contractor or to traffic control that they were on site. They began painting the stripes toward the overpass bridge and found that they were getting off of the layout. They were trying to do the layout for the painting operation and decided to take measurements from the shoulder across the live traffic lane. A car entered the highway, swerved, and struck Employee #1, killing him instantly.
