Dear Sergeant Mallwitz:

This letter is in response to your July 5 request for information on changes in training requirements in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for bloodborne pathogens and tuberculosis. OSHA published its final standard on bloodborne pathogens (29 CFR 1910.1030) in December of 1991. There have been no changes to that standard since that time.

Concerning tuberculosis, OSHA issued a compliance directive in February 1996, covering enforcement procedures for tuberculosis, a copy of which is enclosed. The Agency is presently working on a proposed tuberculosis standard. That standard, when issued, will be published in the Federal Register as a proposed rule for public comment. For training purposes, we would recommend using the enclosed directive until such time that a final standard is issued.
