  1. Alliance Background

    Overview:

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta, and the Georgia Institute of Technology –Safety, Health, and Environmental Technology Division (Georgia Tech) formed an Alliance to provide Mexican workers throughout the southeast with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety and allow them to exercise their rights fully.

    Representatives from OSHA communicated with Alliance members from the Mexican Consulate and Georgia Tech during the following time periods: June 4, 2012; August 27, 2012; and August 31, 2012.

    • On June 4, 2012, the compliance assistance specialist (CAS) provided staff members from Consulate General of Mexico with safety and health complaint screening training. The training also focused on worker's rights under the OSH Act.

    Outreach and Communication

    • During this period, the compliance assistance specialist (CAS) and a compliance safety and health officer (CSHO) from the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office supported the Occupational health Week conducted by the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta, GA. These presentations were conducted on the following dates:
       
      • On Monday, June 4, 2012, with 125 participants
      • On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, with 80 participants
      • On Wednesday, June 6, 2012, with 120 participants
      • On Thursday, June 7, 2012, with 110 participants
      • On Friday, June 8, 2012, with 125 participants
    • On June 5, 2012, the compliance assistance specialist (CAS) from the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office conducted a safety and health presentation during a Mobile Consulate event in Dalton, GA, in support of the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta, GA. During the event a wide range of OSHA publications were distributed to attendees in Spanish, including the following:
       
      • Heat Illness Prevention Campaign posters and factsheets
      • OSHA Quickcards (confined spaces and amputations)
      • OSHA Workers' Rights (booklet and bookmarks)
      • Fall prevention Campaign (posters and factsheets)
    • During this period, the compliance assistance specialist (CAS) from the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office conducted a safety and health presentation during a Labor Week event in support of the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta, GA. These presentations were conducted on the following dates:
       
      • August 27, 2012
      • August 31, 2012
    • During this period, the OSHA Atlanta Regional Office coordinated with the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health (TOSHA) Program to promote outreach event in Tennessee, which were planned by the Consulate General of Mexico in Atlanta, GA.
