    Overview

    Through the OSHA and ISCC Alliance, the organizations are working together to provide ISCC members and others, including small businesses, in the pet care industry with information, guidance, and access to training resources to help them protect employees’ health and safety. In particular, the Alliance focuses on reducing and preventing exposure to ergonomic hazards and addressing hazard communication issues in the workplace.

      Training and Education Goals

      • Work with OSHA to provide expertise to develop workplace safety and health curricula.

        The OSHA and ISCC Alliance Implementation Team has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.

      Outreach and Communication Goals

      • Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g., print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the ISCC's Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry.

      OSHA and ISCC Alliance Web page

      OSHA developed an OSHA and ISCC Alliance Web page that is posted on the Agency's Web site that includes the OSHA and ISCC Alliance agreement, news releases, and activities and events. This Web page is updated on a regular basis.

      Print and Electronic Media

      Information and news releases on the OSHA and ISCC Alliance signing and the activities of the Alliance have appeared in publications such as the BNA Occupational Safety and Health Reporter. For more information on the articles, see "Alliance Program Reach" in this report.

      OSHA's Electronic Assistance Tools

      The following ISCC representative is participating on the editorial board and is reviewing and providing comments on OSHA's Medical and First Aid, Occupational Epidemiology, and Ventilation Safety and Health Topics pages.

      Tip Sheets

      Clipper Ergonomics

      In order to educate pet care industry employees about proper pet grooming and clipping techniques, ISCC is developing a tip sheet, "Clipper Ergonomics." The tip sheet will focus on proper body position in relation to the groomer's task.

      Handling Chemicals

      ISCC is also developing a tip sheet, "Handling Chemicals," for the pet care industry. The tip sheet will focus on chemical hazards and how to safely handle the chemicals including insecticides that are used in the pet care industry.

      • Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or ISCC's conferences, local meetings, or pet care industry trade events such as the U.S. Pet Pro Classic.

      U. S. Pet Pro Classic, October 17 - 21, 2005, Dallas, Texas

      On October 17, 2005, Pam Lauritzen and Melissa Sirianni gave a presentation on the OSHA and ISCC Alliance during the U.S. Pet Pro Classic in Dallas, Texas. In addition, Ms. Lauritzen and Ms. Sirianni staffed an ISCC and OSHA Alliance exhibit booth and distributed OSHA publications including, the OSHA and ISCC Alliance Activities Summary, All About OSHA and the Alliance Program brochure to attendees.

      Atlanta Pet Fair, March 1 - 6, 2006, Atlanta, Georgia

      During the U.S. Pet Pro Classic, Melissa Sirianni staffed an ISCC and OSHA Alliance exhibit booth and distributed OSHA publications to the attendees, including, All About OSHA, the Alliance Program brochure; the Alliance Program, Consultation Program and Voluntary Protection Programs fact sheets, and the OSHA and ISCC Alliance Activities Summary sheet.

      • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding ISCC's best practices, or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by ISCC and through OSHA- or ISCC-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).

        The OSHA and ISCC Alliance Implementation Team has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.

      • Promote and encourage ISCC members’ or worksites’ participation in OSHA's cooperative programs such as compliance assistance, the Voluntary Protection Programs, and the Consultation Program and its Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.

        The OSHA and ISCC Alliance Implementation Team has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.

      • Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects such as ergonomics and hazard communication that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.

      Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health Goals

      • Convene or participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on ergonomics and hazard communication issues in the pet care industry to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

        The OSHA and ISCC Alliance Implementation Team has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.

    2. Executive Summary

      During the OSHA and ISCC Alliance's first year, OSHA learned more about the pet care industry and ISCC learned about the compliance assistance resources and cooperative programs that the Agency has developed. As a result, OSHA and ISCC representatives are sharing their expertise through developing tip sheets, participating on three of OSHA's electronic assistance tools editorial boards and speaking and exhibiting opportunities. For example:

      • ISCC is developing safety and health tip sheets on handling chemicals and clipper ergonomics for the pet care industry.

      • An ISCC implementation team member is serving on OSHA's Medical and First Aid, Occupational Epidemiology, and Ventilation Safety and Health Topics pages’ editorial boards.

      • Pam Lauritzen and Melissa Sirianni staffed an ISCC and OSHA Alliance exhibit booth during the Atlanta Pet Fair, March 1 - 6, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. They distributed OSHA publications including, All About OSHA, the Alliance Program brochure, and the OSHA and ISCC Alliance Activities Summary sheets to attendees.

  4. Upcoming Milestones

    The OSHA and ISCC Alliance implementation team has discussed a number of activities that will be undertaken in the upcoming year. For example, Melissa Sirianni will staff an ISCC and OSHA Alliance Program exhibit booth during the U. S. Pet Pro Classic, November 11 - 13, 2006 in Dallas, Texas. OSHA will provide publications for distribution at the event as well as a speaker.

    In addition, ISCC will continue to serve on the editorial boards of OSHA's Medical and First Aid, Occupational Epidemiology and Ventilation Safety and Health Topics pages. The ISCC representative will review and provide comments on the pages annually. Further, OSHA will continue to update the OSHA and ISCC Alliance Web page with safety and health information, related documents and activities and events. ISCC will complete development of its ISCC and OSHA Alliance Web page on its Web site.

    ISCC will finalize tip sheets on handling chemicals, clipper ergonomics, preventing dog bites and lifting hazards for the pet care industry. Once completed the tip sheets will be posted on the ISCC and OSHA Alliance Web page on the association's Web site.

    Finally, OSHA will provide safety and health publications to the ISCC for the U.S. Pet Pro Classic and the Atlanta Pet Fair as requested.
